The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) is a highly concentrated source of reports of randomised and quasi-randomised controlled trials. The majority of CENTRAL records are taken from bibliographic databases (mainly MEDLINE and Embase), but records are also derived from other published and unpublished sources. In addition to bibliographic details (author, source, year, etc.) CENTRAL records will often include an abstract (a summary of the article). They do not contain the full text of the article.
The European Union Clinical Trials Register allows you to search for protocol and results information on:
•interventional clinical trials that are conducted in the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA);
•clinical trials conducted outside the EU / EEA that are linked to European paediatric-medicine development.
The ISRCTN registry is a primary clinical trial registry recognised by WHO and ICMJE that accepts all clinical research studies (whether proposed, ongoing or completed), providing content validation and curation and the unique identification number necessary for publication. All study records in the database are freely accessible and searchable.
ICMJE editors and other journal editors require registration of clinical trial information on publicly available Web sites before enrollment of study subjects. Not only does this book discuss the genesis of these requirements, it also provides practical information for researchers and sponsors on how to establish a workflow for a clinical registry project, how to file to a registry, and how to post results.
The clinical trial is "the most definitive tool for evaluation of the applicability of clinical research." It represents "a key research activity with the potential to improve the quality of health care and control costs through careful comparison of alternative treatments" . It has been called on many occasions, "the gold st- dard" against which all other clinical research is measured. Although many clinical trials are of high quality, a careful reader of the medical literature will notice that a large number have deficiencies in design, conduct, analysis, presentation, and/or interpretation of results. The purpose of this fourth edition is to update areas in which major progress has been made since the publication of the third edition. We have revised most chapters considerably and added one on ethical issues.
