This is a compilation of generic and discipline-specific learning objects that can be integrated into library instruction in face-to-face classes, embedded as a course resource, or offered as a stand-alone learning tool in online courses. Apart from resources that relate specifically to information literacy development, there is also a tab listing major learning object repositories and freely accessible open educational resources (OERs) that can be used in multimedia teaching and online learning environments.
OERs can be defined as:
…teaching, learning and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use or re-purposing by others. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials or techniques used to support access to knowledge. (Hewlett Foundation, 2007)
Learning objects take many forms including guided interactive tutorials, live screen captures with voice-over describing research strategies, PowerPoint slides with screen captures and explanations, animations, simulations, games, videos, and short-answer, matching, and multiple-choice quizzes.
