The embodied violinist : teaching violin with passion and practicality
by
Gwen Thompson-Robinow
Canadian violinist and pedagogue Gwen Thompson-Robinow has over 50 years of experience teaching the violin, having held appointments at several Canadian institutions including the University of Western Ontario, University of British Columbia, and Vancouver Academy of Music. Her book, The Embodied Violinist is a compilation of her experience, sharing ideas, exercises, and anecdotes to assist violinists in experiencing the instrument “as an extension of the body,” to “ignite their musical passion” and express through it in an effective way.
What sets this manual apart is that the ideas are complimented with personal stories and quotes from the author’s teachers and students. By including a number of primary source documents, Thompson-Robinow captures the transfer of knowledge from her teachers – Sophie Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté, Ivan Galamian, Joseph Gingold, and Jascha Heifetz, among others – to her students, many of whom hold positions as performers and teachers in Canada and across the globe. Snippets of “sound advice” and “info tidbits” provide practical information from the author’s own experience while “legacy moments” share personal stories about her mentors. Additionally, quotes from her students, former and current, are a testament to the effectiveness of her methods, bringing the entire text to life.
