Master of Earth and Energy Resources Leadership Research Guide

Activity 4: Source Evaluation Challenge

Working in your table groups, navigate to the MEERL Research Guide – Workshop Materials and Links. There 6 different information sources linked here. For each source, quickly determine:

1. What type of source it is. Primary or secondary, as well as specific type, i.e. peer-reviewed article, industry report, blog post, etc.
2. Would you use the source for Assignment A, Assignment B, both, or neither? Why?

Assignment A: Paper evaluating the potential of geothermal energy as a sustainable resource in Eastern Canada.

Assignment B: Report on community perspectives and public policy response to renewable energy development in Indigenous communities.

Activity 5: GenAI Citation Spot Check

You have been given an excerpt that was generated by a GenAI tool. It contains several factual statements, but no citations.

  1. Identify where citations are needed. Highlight or underline every sentence or fact that you think should have a citation to support it. Bonus points if you can identify the incorrect statement.
  2. Suggest the type of source that would be best to cite, i.e. peer-reviewed article, government or industry report, etc.
  3. At the bottom, I have provided information for two sources. Using PurdueOWL as your guide, create the reference list citation and in-text citation for each.
