Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) help data producers take control of the management of their research, share, get credit for it and build their reputation through data citations. DOIs also make research data easier to access, reuse and verify, thereby making it easier to build on previous work, conduct new research and avoid duplicating already existing work. DOIs are becoming increasingly expected in good data citations.
DataCite Canada is a data registration service that operates under the global DataCite umbrella. DataCite Canada provides Canadian data centres and libraries with a mechanism for registering research data and assigning digital object identifiers (DOIs) to them.
DataCite is a not-for-profit organization established in December 2009 with the goal of: establishing easier access to research data on the Internet, increasing acceptance of research data as legitimate, citable contributions to the scholarly record, and supporting data archiving that will permit results to be verified and re-purposed for future study.
