Open and Licensed Data

Open means anyone can freely access, use, modify, and share for any purpose (subject, at most, to requirements that preserve provenance and openness).

When data is licensed there are often particular conditions of use. For example, in the Scholars Geoportal licensed data falls under the following end user agreement:

I am a faculty member, staff member, or student at an Ontario University or a subscribing university outside of Ontario, and agree to the following terms of use:

  • These data products are provided for the exclusive purposes of teaching, learning, academic research and publishing, and/or planning of educational services within the University.
  • I am prohibited from using these data products in the pursuit of any commercial or income-generating venture either privately, or under the auspices of the University.
  • The distribution of any data obtained under this agreement through sharing, sale, donation, transfer or exchange is strictly prohibited.
  • I understand these conditions and agree to abide by them. By clicking 'I agree' I am agreeing to the full Scholars Portal Terms of Use.
