Explore the art, thought, and scholarship emerging from the Black Studies Summer Seminar Series, taking place during the week of June 9–13, 2025 at Queen’s University. This annual gathering brings together artists, scholars, and practitioners of Black studies to discuss a range of experiences and practices that center “Black Canada in conversation with the African diaspora (from website).”
This year’s theme, “On Gathering (over, under, and in-between),” invites reflection on the meanings, tensions, and possibilities of Black gathering across time, space, geography, and form. Throughout the week, participants will engage in public keynotes, closed workshops, and collective conversations on Black life, art, study, memory, and futurity. In this guide, you will find a curated selection of books, articles, and films that supplement this year’s themes. Whether you are attending the seminar or exploring independently, these resources are meant to support deeper study and collective reflection on the histories, aesthetics, and politics of Black gathering.
