Finding Information Using Omni

The Queen's University Library website is an excellent starting point for your research.

Omni is the library's discovery tool that allows you to search our vast collection of print and electronic resources and the collections of 19 university libraries across Ontario..  

Preparing Your Search

Before you begin searching Omni, take a few minutes to prepare your search. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What type of information resource am I looking for? A book? A report? A standard? A few journal articles?
  2. Do I need factual information (data, definitions, formulae), a general overview, or historical background information?
  3. What keywords and synonyms describe my topic?

Searching for Known Items

Searching for known items is fairly easy. For example. your might know the title, author or identification number of an engineering book, journal article, or standard.

To find a book in Omni, simply search the first few words in the title or the author's name. 

To find an article in Omni, search the first few words in the title or the author's name or the article's DOI. What is a DOI? DOI standards for Digital Object Identifier. A DOI is a unique string of numbers, letters, and symbols that identifies an article or document on the web.    

Searching by Keyword

To search for information on a specific topic you'll have to use keywords.
