Primary & Secondary Sources

Primary sources in music offer commentary and artefacts from the time the music was created and reveal how it was performed, produced, and received by audiences. Examples include:
  • concert programs
  • newspaper articles from the time
  • reviews
  • recordings
  • interviews and speeches
  • diaries and letters
  • composer autograph scores
  • the music itself

Secondary sources provide analysis, interpretations, and descriptions of primary sources.  Examples include:

  • books (including textbooks, biographies)
  • articles
  • editorials
  • musical criticism
Tertiary sources compile different tytpes of sources on a topic: Examples include:
  • encylopedias and dictionaries
  • handbooks
  • bibliographies
