Citing Sources

Throughout the research process it is important for you to keep track of the information you used by citing your sources. Citing sources:

  • Documents what sources you have used in writing your paper;
  • Gives credit to an author's work and acknowledge their ideas;
  • Provides your instructor with information needed to identify and retrieve the cited sources; and
  • Avoids plagiarism.

Many of the electronic databases you will be using (including Omni) offer you the option to download, print or email the citations to the material you find. This is a great way to keep track of the information you're considering.

Citation Management

Use citation software to organize your own library of citations, incorporate quotes into your assignments, and compile reference lists (bibliographies) for your assignments. Citation managers will take care of the citation style required for your assignments and can help ensure that all citations and bibliographies are organized in accordance with the standards.

There are many different citation managers available for your use including Zotero, Mendeley, and Reference Manager.

For more detailed information please consult Citing and Citation Managers.

Citation Styles

Different disciplines or courses use different citation styles, so confirm with your instructor which style you should use.

The Library has print and electronic copies of various citation style guides.
