The Queen's University Biological Station (QUBS) is one of the premier scientific field stations in Canada. For almost 70 years, researchers and students have gathered at QUBS to conduct leading-edge research and participate in courses spanning ecology, evolution, conservation, geography, and environmental science.

The Canadian Network of Northern Research Operators (CNNRO) is a network of research support facilities providing specialized technical services to academic, government, private, and international scientific research sectors. Its member facilities provide the know-how and infrastructure that make research possible in Canada's Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. CNNRO member facilities range from oceanographic research vessels and long-established research institutes and observatories, to seasonal field stations and un-staffed remote monitoring installations. In 1989, the Organization of Biological Field Stations (OBFS) created an International Committee to explore the potential of creating an International Organization of Biological Field Stations (IOBFS). OBFS recognized that field stations on Earth share many of the same goals, objectives, and problems; thus, an international organization to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas related to these interest seemed appropriate.
