Citation Styles

Citation styles are a set of rules or standards established by a specific society, association, or publisher for documenting various sources of information. It is a good idea to consult with your thesis supervisor to find out if they have any preference regarding which citation style you should use for your research.

The Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation (aka "The McGill Guide") has been adopted as the authority on legal citation by several Canadian legal publications. Other citation styles may also be used depending on the preference of your supervisor.

The tenth edition of the McGill Guide is available in print at the law library, or you can access it electronically via your personal Westlaw Edge Canada accounts. If you need a concise refresher to the McGill Guide rules, the law library's guide, Legal Citation with the 10th Edition of the McGill Guide is an excellent resource.

The Queen's Library website also provides a list of links to other online style guides.

Citation Management

Citation management software (i.e., citation managers) can help save you time by formatting footnotes and bibliographies for you in the citation style of your choice. In addition to being a great tool for academic writing, citation managers can also help you collect, organize, and annotate information sources (including full-text PDFs) for other purposes.

Queen's Library has a guide on citation managers that are available for use. However, if you are using the McGill Guide style, then it is recommended to use the Zotero citation manager as it is the only tool that currently supports the McGill Guide citation style. For guidance on using Zotero, see the law library's guide, Legal Citation Management with Zotero.
