Headings

Screen readers use headings to navigate a document. Use headings consistently throughout your guide. This helps all users navigate the text, especially those using a screen reader. Improper headings structure hinders usability and accessibility.

  • Use the heading formats available from the Format Drop-down menu when creating content for your guide.
  • The Page Title is a Heading 1 (H1).
    • Only one H1 level is allowed per page.
  • Content Box Titles are a Heading 2 (H2).
  • Use Heading 3 (H3) and Heading 4 (H4) to structure your content.
    • Heading 4 is a sub-heading of a Heading 3.
  • Do not skip heading levels.
  • Headings and labels should describe the topic or purpose.
    • Use headings to introduce content.
