Subject Headings vs Keyword Searching
Subject headings allow you to search the library catalogue for resources on a particular author or topic and are often more productive than keyword searches.
Keyword searches work best if you have multiple concepts or topics. Use the results to find relevant titles and identify assigned subject headings for your topic in order to find similar books.
To find information on a single work, try either an keyword search or subject search. For example:
"handmaid's tale" and atwood [keyword boolean search]
Atwood Margaret 1939- Handmaid's tale [subject heading search]
NOTE: You can also try just searching the author as subject and browse list of subjects for corresponding work.
To find criticism on an author, search for the author as a subject. For example:
cohen leonard [subject heading search] and also note the sub-heading: Criticism and interpretation
To find information about the time period and country in which the work was written, try a subject heading search:

To find information about a specific genre of Canadian literature, try a keyword search and check the subject headings of retrieved results for more leads.
