Journal Citation

How to analyze a journal citation

Bryan-Wilson, Julia. "Fantastic Reality: Louise Bourgeois and a Story of Modern Art." The Art Bulletin 89, no. 4 (12, 2007): 823-826.

The citation refers to an article in a journal.

Tip: Search Omni by Journal Search to see if Queen's Library subscribes to the journal art bulletin.  Omit initial articles (the, an, a), if any.  Ignore punctuation and case.

Finding Journals

When you find journal article(s) you need by searching your topic in a database such as Artbibliographies Modern, or Art Abstracts, 1984-present (earlier Art Index Retrospective, 1929-1984), the journals may be in print, electronic or both formats at Queen's.

Searching Omni by Journal Search is the best way to find out our print or electronic journal holdings, since not all years are covered in both formats. Omit initial article (e.g. The) when searching titles.

If Queen's does not have the journal you need, you can fill in a blank request form for an article through RACER.  ILL service for e-journal articles is allowed but scan requests of print journal articles are temporarily suspended in RACER during COVID-19.

Evaluating Journal Articles

Journal articles are important as they contain the most-up-to-date research in a given field and often focus on a particular aspect of a topic.

Consult our guide Distinguishing Scholarly Journals from Other Periodicals, to help evaluate and decide which journal articles will be useful for your essay.
