This guide provides an introduction to legal citation in Canada.

Citing Indigenous Sources with the McGill Guide

The editors of the McGill Guide have issued a Statement of Commitment that outlines their plans for "crafting a unique approach to Indigenous sources of knowledge in time for publication of the Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation, 11th edition." See page E-vii of the McGill Guide for more details about this commitment.

In the current edition, you can find guidance for the following types of Indigenous legal materials:

  • 2.1.1: Indigenous Legislative Documents
  • 2.2: Indigenous Constitutions
  • 6.14: Personal Communications
  • 6.19: Physical Objects

In the box below we note other guidance available for citation of Indigenous sources.
