Librarians may use altmetrics to:
- Add value to faculty publications disseminated in the institutional repository by displaying altmetrics data as an indicator of public interest in open access version of works, thus encouraging researchers to deposit their works.
- Increase authors’ awareness of the scholarly and societal impacts of their scholarly outputs, valuable when indicating potential knowledge transfer in funding applications and other research reporting initiatives.
- Compliment other library acquisitions and assessment information on the usage of journals and other purchased information resources.
- Support both faculty and the research administrators in related strategic research planning activities for which indicators of public 'attention' and 'engagement' with research outputs may be meaningful.
- Advise researchers on helpful approaches to improve upon the attention paid toward, and reach of, their work.
