LibGuides 2 Guidelines at QUL

Guide & Box Titles

When choosing a title for your guide and boxes please:

  • Use Title Case
Use capital letters for the principal words. Articles, conjunctions, and prepositions do not get capital letters unless they start the title (e.g. The Last of the Mohicans).
  • Use &
Please use '&' instead of 'and'. When writing copy in the page, please do the opposite; use 'and' and not '&'.

For Course Guides

Please follow to pattern [COURSE CODE]: [COURSE NAME] such as:

  • BIOL 111: Ecology & the Environment

For Other Guides

We will need to consider a consistent title pattern for those guides that will be co-presented in a single list. For example, if we want to have a guide on how to cite sources for each general subject area, we should make sure that we title the guides in the same order, such as:

  • Citing Sources in Humanities & Social Sciences
  • Citing Sources in Health Sciences

Headings

It is important to ensure that your guide content follows proper semantic HTML markup. This is a key factor in both the accessibility of your guide, and the way you guide is indexed by search engines. Your guide will automatically use heading level 1 (H1) for the guide title and heading level 2 (H2) for each box title. Therefore, when adding headings in your boxes you should start at heading level 3 (H3) and work down from there.

  • H1: Guide Title
  • H2: Box Title
  • H3: Sub-heading
  • H4: Sub-sub-heading

First Box Heading

Because LibGuides does not show the page heading by default (other than in the sidenav bolding), it may be desirable to title the first box presented on your page identically to your page title. For example, if I had a page called Article Indexes, I may want to also title the first box on that page Article Indexes.
