Why Cite Sources?

It's important to cite the sources that you used to write your research paper. Citing sources:

  • Documents the sources used in writing your paper.
  • Gives credit to an author's work, idea, opinion or theory.
  • Provides you and your instructor the information needed to identify and retrieve the cited sources.
  • Avoids plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious offense. For more information, refer to: The Wriitng Centre, Avoiding Plaigarism

What to Cite?

You must cite your sources when you:

  • Quote someone directly.
  • Paraphrase or summarize someone else"s ideas.
  • Use information (such as facts, figures and ideas) that is not common knowledge.
