Download & Install Zotero

Getting Zotero 5.0 and the Browser Connector:

To install Zotero and the browser connector visit and click the big red Download button.Please not that Zotero will determine the operating system and the used browser in your computer. 


The following page will appear



  1. Use Google Chrome or Firefox browser
  2. Go to the Zotero Download page
    • The site will automatically detect your operating system (Win, Mac, Linux*) and browser.
    • Zotero DOES NOT work with Chromebooks or Office 365
  3. Download Zotero 5.0 and browser Connector

Installation of Zotero

  1. Close any Microsoft Office programs (e.g. Word)
  2. Open the downloaded Zotero file (.exe or .dmg).
  3. Follow the installation directions
    • Zotero and an MS Word add-in will be installed
  4. Open the Zotero program
  5. Open MS Word
    •   Notice the word Zotero on your toolbar.

Installation of Browser Connector (Add-on/extension)

  1. Install the Zotero Connector for your browser (best with Chrome or Firefox)
    • Browser may restart after installation
    • You'll notice a Zotero icon (a "Z" or a small rectangle) on the right side of your browser toolbar.

Getting Zotero: Standalone

Zotero 5.0 is a separate software download that is not tied to the browser. Standalone has connectors that work with Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.

You must have Zotero 5.0 open to use the browser connector icons. If you don't you will just be redirected to Zotero's website.

You do not have to install the word processor plugins with 5.0. The plugins are bundled with the software download.

To install the Zotero 5.0 software visit  You must have administrative privileges on your computer to download the software. Click on the link for the correct operating system and follow standard procedures for installing software on your computer. Zotero 5.0 comes with word processor plug ins, so you will not need to install these plugins.
