Artifical Intelligence and the research process

Privacy

Privacy, as it related to AI tools, needs to be looked at from two perspectives:

1. Private and/or confidential information appearing in the output.

  • While AI developers claim to have obtained their data legally and ethically, due to the lack of transparency on that data, it is impossible to know for sure where that data came from and what it includes. As such, some AI tools have been known to include private and confidential information (such as a personal phone number or address) in its outputs.

2. Input being saved and used/re-used to continue AI tool development.

  • Always read the terms of use or privacy statements of the AI tool you’re using. Some AI tools will use your inputted data (and the associated output) to further train or audit their models.
  • Do not assume that any data you input into an AI tool is private and confidential.
