Library Accessibility Services

Alternate Formats

Students with a documented print disability may request course readings and research materials in an alternate format if they are registered with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services and their advisor has made a referral. Library Accessibility Services staff order textbooks in alternate formats (e.g., PDF files, MS Word, Large Print, MP3, audio books, or Braille) from publishers and repositories and digitize or transcribe textbooks and course materials in-house as required.

Library staff work closely with faculty to ensure that all course materials are accessible for students with print disabilities. Please contact staff at the adaptive.technology.centre@queensu.ca for more information or assistance.

Captioned Media

When you are choosing multimedia resources for your course, please note that the Library has licensed access to multiple collections of streamed video content.  Many of the videos in these collections are captioned.

You can also use Omni to search for captioned videos/films using the Title field in the Advanced Search screen. Look for phrases such as ‘Films for the hearing impaired’ or ‘Motion pictures for the hearing impaired’ or 'Video recordings for the hearing impaired' in the Subject headings to identify captioned video/film.

The Library can arrange closed captioning for videos in our library collection. To request videos to be captioned, please contact the Adaptive Technology Centre. Video captioning may require substantial preparation time, please submit your requests in advance of the semester you require this service.

Accessibility Hub

The Queen's Accessibility Hub is a central online resource for accessibility at Queen's. Please refer to the Accessibility Hub's How to Information Guides to ensure that you are creating an accessible learning environment for all students.

These guides provide information on how to ensure your documents (Word, PDF), PowerPoint presentations, websites, multimedia files, learning management platform, and social media communication tools are accessible for all students in your class, especially those who have a disability.

Adaptive Technology Centre

The Adaptive Technology Centre, located in Stauffer Library contains adaptive software and assistive devices for students with disabilities.

The Adaptive Technologist can assist you with questions pertaining to software, hardware, apps and assistive devices for persons with disabilities.
