Considerations for AI Use in Research

When deciding whether to use AI tools in research, careful consideration should be given to the following:

Publication: Journals are treating AI-generated content differently. Most major journals and publishers now have policies on AI-generated content in research. Consideration should be given to publication goals of research and how AI-use will impact these goals.

Citation: Consistently, when using AI tools in research proper citation is required. For example, citation guidance can be found on the APA Style Blog.

Terms of Use: Each AI tool stipulates terms of use with consideration for ownership of intellectual property. Consideration should be given to the terms for the specific AI tool used.

Data Security, Privacy, and Safety: Privacy, safety, ethical, and security challenges have been identified with certain AI tools. Particularly when working with human subject research and data, graduate students must declare and receive clearance from the General Research Ethics Board on any AI-use in which data will be stored, analyzed, and inputted. Developing an awareness of the safety risks of using AI tools is the responsibility of the user and researcher.
