GDE & PME Library Research Guide

APA Citation Style

The Faculty of Education prefers the American Psychology Association style for the formatting of scholarly papers including in-text and reference citations.

We recommend referring to the APA Formatting Style Guide created by Purdue University Library for quick reference when you have questions about how to cite.

logo apa style blogThe APA Style Blog for the 7th edition is a good place to search for the answers to questions about citiation formatting.

The Scribbr site has an unofficial but succinct list of 17 of the most notable updates in the 7th edition.

Can't find an example of the type of reference you need to cite?  The APA recommends you: "choose the example that is most like your source and follow that format" (http://www.apastyle.org/learn/faqs/example-reference.aspx).

Note that reference list entries must have a hanging indent of .5 in. that does not show up in these examples.  For more detail and examples, refer to the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL).

For published work

Follow the APA guidelines for the appropriate format (book chapter, journal article, website, etc.) and include the work as you would work by any other author.

For an unpublished paper

To paraphrase or quote unpublished work that you authored or co-authored, and avoid self-plagiarism, (1) inquire with your professor about using your own previous work, and (2) include a reference.

Author, A. A. (Year). Title of the work [Unpublished paper]. Department Name, University Name.

For work previously submitted to Queen’s or another post-secondary institution

Your work could be flagged by Turnitin’s Similarity report.  Providing the course code will help your professor and provide clarity.

Author, A. A. (Year). Title of the work [Unpublished paper submitted for course code]. Department Name, University Name.
