LibGuides 2 Training at QUL

This is a Guide to the use of LibGuides at Queen's University. It is 'in progress' at the moment and will continue to be built upon by the LibGuides Implementation Group.

Guide Layout

We have two options for guide layout:

  • a two-column layout (2-col) which has a right-hand menu with optional boxes underneath it and a main center column
  • a three-column layout (3-col) which has a right-hand menu with optional boxes underneath it, a main center column, and a third narrower column on the left side

The 2-col layout is the default layout. To switch layouts:

  1. Click on the gear icon (top right) and choose Guide Type & Group
  2. Choose the 3-col group or Do Not Assign to a Group for the 2-col layout

You can change between the two different layouts at any time.

Moving Boxes

You can move the boxes around on a page by:

  1. Click the Page edit icon (3 gears)
  2. Select Reorder / Move -> Boxes
  3. Drag the boxes around into the appropriate columns. The column labelled Side-Nav Column will appear under the guide menu on the right-hand side.
  4. Click Save

You can move boxes around at any time.

Tips

  1. Try not to put much under the menu in the side-nav column; boxes there will push other content down the page in mobile view. A good approach would be to only use it for the author profile box.
  2. Try to keep the main amount of content in the center column. When using the 3-column layout, the third column could be used for things like:
    1. Related links
    2. Related guides
    3. Books from the catalogue (1-3 ideally)
