Legal Citation Management With Zotero

This guide describes how to use Zotero to import, manage, and create citations for Canadian legal information.

Download and Install Zotero

To install the Zotero Desktop App and the Zotero browser connector visit https://www.zotero.org/ and click the Download button. Please note that Zotero will determine the operating system and the browser used in your computer.

The following page will appear:

 

Download:

 

  1. Use Google Chrome or Firefox browser
  2. Go to the Zotero Download page
  3. Download Zotero 7 and Zotero Connector
     

Installation of Zotero:

  1. Close any Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Word)
  2. Open the downloaded Zotero file (.exe or .dmg)
  3. Follow the installation directions
    • Zotero and Microsoft Word add-in will be installed
  4. Open the Zotero program
  5. Open Microsoft Word
    • The Zotero tab should be added to your Microsoft Word ribbon

 

Installation of Browser Connector (add-on/extension):

  1. Install the Zotero Connector for your browser (works best with Chrome or Firefox)
  2. Browser may restart after installation
    • There should now be a Zotero icon () or page icon () in the upper right-hand corner of your browser toolbar.

Zotero for iOS

The Zotero app is available to download for free on the App Store for iPhone and iPad users. 

Download:

  1. Download the free Zotero app to your iPhone or iPad from the App Store.
  2. Once downloaded, open the app on your device and open the settings menu.
  3. Select "account" and enter your Zotero username and password to access your Zotero library.
    • If you have not created a Zotero account, create a free account using the online Zotero register page.
