Legal Citation Management With Zotero

This guide describes how to use Zotero to import, manage, and create citations for Canadian legal information.

Why Set Preferences?

Setting your preferences can help make your workflow for Zotero 6 run more smoothly. Follow the steps for adjusting your preferences settings outlined in the box below. Also, make sure you register for a username and password in order to sync your collection.

Preference Settings

  1. Set up a free Zotero account.
  2. Register for a free account (Username and Password) on the site (this is a Zotero account and you can use any email address to register)

  

To Sync your library between your browser and the standalone client you need to add the Zotero username and password in the Zotero preferences by selecting Edit > Preferences as shown here:

Select the Sync tab and enter Username and Password

In order to create bibliographies using the McGill Guide (9th edition) citation style, you need to first add the McGill Guide citation style in the Zotero preferences by selecting Edit > Preferences as shown below:

Select Cite, then Get additional styles:

Type "mcgill guide" in the Zotero Style Repository, then select Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation 9th Edition (McGill Guide):

Add the Queen's University Library link resolver to your Zotero preferences. This will enable Zotero to connect with Omni when you use Zotero's Library Lookup option. 

Go to Zotero preferences by selecting Edit > Preferences as shown below:

 

Select Advanced > General, then insert the following URL into the Open URL Link Resolver box: https://ocul-qu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/openurl?institution=01OCUL_QU&vid=01OCUL_QU:QU_DEFAULT&
